The BC Salvation Army Anti-Human Trafficking Programs serve international and domestic women and girls who have been coerced into situations of exploitation and/or human trafficking and who are in need of protective and restorative programming. Women and girls who have been recruited, transported, transferred, harboured or received by means of deception, fraud, coercion, abuse of power, payment to others in control of them, threats of force, use of force or abduction, for the purpose of sexual and/or labour exploitation will be considered for intake.
Deborah’s Gate residential program, an intake candidate must be:
- Female (or transgender presenting female)
- 18 years of age or older*
- A victim of domestic or international exploitation and/or human trafficking
- Fleeing a perpetrator who poses a real or unknown threat to their safety
- A minimum of 3-7 days detoxed from all substances*
*Sexually exploited children will be accepted on a temporary basis in consultation with the Ministry of Children and Family Services and contingent upon capacity to serve them effectively
*Methadone, suboxone, and nabalone are permitted with a valid Health Canada script
An intake candidate may have experienced one or all of the following:
- Sexual and/or labour exploitation for the financial gain of another person
- False promises of employment, conditions of employment or remuneration; violated contracts
- Forced addiction or substance use as a means to cope, drug & alcohol use*
- Coercion or intimidation via threats of or actual use of violence to perform sexual acts or provide services
- Physical or psychological confinement
- A lack of control over identification documents such as passports, bank cards, visa’s, or immigration papers
- Controlled movement from one location to another for the purpose of exploitation
Cooperation with law enforcement or immigration officials is not mandatory upon intake unless required by law; however residents will continually be encouraged to access all essential services available to them.
*The BC Salvation Army Anti-Human Trafficking Programs currently do not have a detox, so all referred individuals are required to have a minimum of 3-7 days clean from substance use. Upon entry, all clients with addictions and mental wellness challenges will participate in the full time Renew: Mental Health and Addictions Program, and are required to be committed to sobriety supports during the entirety of their stay in our program.
